UAE, PH swap prisoners

The Department of Justice said 95 Filipinos convicted of various crimes in the UAE have been exchanged for two of its citizens convicted here.

“We were the ones who made a demand,” said DoJ Undersecretary Markk Perete during an interview over DZXL. The two UAE nationals were exchanged after they were pardoned by President Duterte along with 135 Filipinos and two other foreigners. Perete credited the Department of Foreign Affairs for making the prisoner swap deal with the UAE happen.The Philippines has transfer of sentenced persons agreements with the UAE, Canada, Cuba, Hong Kong, Spain, and Thailand.

Perete said these Filipinos returned to the Philippines in two batches – 45 in the first and 50 in the second.
