PAGASA: 70% chance La Niña will happen this year in PH

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has upgraded the La Niña Watch to a La Niña Alert, which means the chance of a La Niña forming this year has increased to 70 percent.

While neutral condition where neither La Niña nor El Niño is prevailing at present, most climate models suggest the chance of La Niña forming in 2020 is about 70 percent, the weather bureau said. In an earlier interview with PAGASA’s climate monitoring and prediction section chief Ana Liza Solis, she explained that the higher than average number of tropical cyclones that entered or formed within the Philippine area of responsibility and non-landfalling cyclones in August are prelude to a developing La Niña.

All these tropical cyclones did not make landfall however, “Enteng,” “Ferdie,” and “Julian” slightly enhanced the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” which brought heavy precipitation in some parts of western Luzon.
