UAB football coach Trent Dilfer has been vocal about the disparities in Name, Image, and Likeness ( NIL ) deals across college football , particularly the aggressive recruitment tactics employed by some of the Blazers' American Athletic Conference (AAC) rivals.
During a recent appearance on a Birmingham radio show, Dilfer alleged that teams within the AAC are willing to offer players from UAB double or triple their current NIL earnings to transfer, even if they wouldn't be guaranteed a starting position. Dilfer pointed to the significant number of players who left UAB for other AAC schools via the transfer portal, highlighting the financial incentives driving these decisions. While he refrained from naming specific teams, his comments prompted a reaction from Tulane coach Jon Sumrall, who seemingly acknowledged the criticism through a cryptic tweet. UAB has also actively recruited transfers for the 2025 season, welcoming players from prominent programs like West Virginia, UTEP, Iowa, and Boston College. However, Dilfer acknowledged the challenges of competing financially with institutions that can offer significantly higher NIL payouts. He emphasized the importance of providing players with a strong sense of care, connection, opportunity, and a positive culture, while acknowledging that UAB's resources in this area are limited.Despite the struggles of the past two seasons, marked by a combined record of seven wins, UAB athletics director Mark Ingram has committed to supporting Dilfer and the program. The school has pledged additional investments to enhance competitiveness, and Dilfer has implemented significant staff changes, bringing in seasoned coaches to bolster the program.
