The U.S. Coast Guard continues to intercept migrant boats attempting to land on the San Diego coastline. Recent incidents highlight the increasing frequency and danger of these maritime smuggling attempts.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported the interception of a 25-foot panga boat carrying 16 Mexican migrants approximately 15 miles off the coast of Mission Bay early Sunday morning. All 16 individuals on board were taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol for further processing. This incident marks another instance in a recent surge of panga boats carrying migrants attempting to land on San Diego's coastline.

In a separate event, authorities apprehended a suspected human smuggling vessel carrying 21 migrants roughly 20 miles off the coast of Point Loma. All 21 migrants were also transferred to Border Patrol custody. Earlier, a separate boat carrying 14 migrants was discovered, highlighting the increasing frequency of these maritime smuggling attempts. On Saturday, a particularly tragic incident unfolded when a boat with more than a dozen migrants onboard was overturned by a large wave as it neared the Ocean Beach surfline. A 57-year-old woman trapped within the capsized vessel perished, and several others sustained injuries.Marine Safety Lt. Brian Clark of the San Diego Lifeguard emphasized the inherent dangers posed by these migrant boats, not only to the passengers but also to the first responders attempting to rescue them. Clark stated, 'There are several lifeguards that went underneath the boat to pull some of the people out. There were some people that were trapped underneath the boat. That was a pretty critical rescue.' According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), within the last three months alone, they have, in conjunction with other agencies, responded to over 200 smuggling attempts by water. These attempts have involved a variety of methods, including individuals trying to cross on flotation devices, personal watercraft, recreational boats, and panga boats
