Firefighters successfully contained a brush fire that broke out near UC San Diego in La Jolla on January 23. The blaze, named the “Gilman fire”, prompted evacuations but was quickly brought under control.
San Diego firefighters battled a brush fire on Gilman Drive south of Via Alicante in La Jolla on January 23, keeping the blaze contained to three acres. Evacuation orders issued for the area were lifted after about 175 firefighters responded to the fire, which broke out around 2 p.m. and charred an acre within 30 minutes. The fire, dubbed the “Gilman fire,” forced Torrey Pines Elementary School to evacuate students and staff as a precaution.
Principal Keith Keiper praised the school staff for their quick action and composure during the emergency. The school, which conducts regular fire and lockdown drills, was undamaged and reopened on January 24. Additional evacuation warnings were issued between La Jolla Shores Drive and Torrey Pines Road and between La Jolla Natural Park and Hillside Drive. However, by 3:30 p.m., UC San Diego announced that the fire's spread had been stopped and there was no immediate threat to the campus. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by dry conditions and Santa Ana winds that frequently fuel brush fires in the San Diego region.
