Some University of Rochester students who now face possible suspension over protests calling for a ceasefire in Gaza spoke out Thursday night during a rally.

Community members and University of Rochester students held a rally Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Genesee Valley Park after the school announced possible suspensions for students who have taken part in campus protests calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. "Drop all of these suspensions," said Laith Awad Mohamed, organizer of Students for Justice in Palestine. "Come sit at the table and discuss with your students. Hear them out, and offer them a true listening ear.

As protests and demonstrations continue, school leaders released a statement Thursday, saying that while they honor students' rights to protest, anyone who violated conduct policies could be suspended. In response to the university's message, community members and students organized Thursday night's demonstration, saying suspension was an extreme step that should not have been taken since the encampment has been peaceful.

"Suspension in the university guidelines is one of the latest and most difficult things to reach," Awad Mohamed said. "It has to be something very extreme, and what we did was a peaceful sit-in.""There's nothing wrong with trying to stand against murder," one student protestor said. "They're jeopardizing my future because of that.

Sarah Mangelsdorf, president for the U of R, says the second sit-in last week resulted in vandalism. She also says students agreed to dismantle their encampment earlier this week."The encampment isn't going anywhere," Awad Mohamed said. "We're going to keep standing strong until they have true conversations with us and negotiate.
