Tyler Robinson, the man accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk on Utah Valley University's campus, is expected back in court, this time with his He was scheduled to appear in court in person for the first time on Monday, but officials with the Utah County Attorney's Office2News spoke with criminal defense attorney Skye Lazaro—who is not affiliated with this case—about what to expect from this highly publicized case. She said Monday's hearing should be simple and quick, but the timeline for the case as a whole will likely be anything but."Monday morning will be the first day that he gets to appear in court with his now appointed attorney," Lazaro said. "My guess is the court will make sure his attorney is willing to accept the appointment, place that on the record, and probably just set further dates for status conferences." Lazaro said there could be some discovery that needs to be exchanged, adding that the case appears to still be under investigation."I would assume his court-appointed attorney is going to need to add some people to her staff. They'll need to get mitigation experts on board because this is a death penalty case," she said."He is entitled to a detention hearing; however, in Utah, likelihood that he'll be released pending trial is probably nonexistent," Lazaro said."Death penalty cases usually take years to get through the system just because of the nature of everything that needs to go into them on the mitigation side, on the defense side, on the prosecution's side," she said. "So I wouldn't even expect a preliminary hearing on this case anytime soon." Lazaro said with felony cases, the defendant doesn't have to enter a plea until after the preliminary hearing, which, as she mentioned, may be a while yet.
