The children were found frozen to death in the Hollywood Casino Hotel at Greektown parking garage around midday. Police say the family had been living out of their van for two to three months, parking at various casinos in the city.
According to interim Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, the family had parked on the ninth floor of the casino parking garage around 1 a.m. Monday. At some point during the night, the vehicle's engine stopped running, potentially due to a mechanical failure or running out of gas. The mother contacted a friend for assistance. It was around 12:12 p.m. that the mother discovered her 9-year-old son was unresponsive and called 911. The friend transported the boy to a nearby children's hospital. While checking on the other four children in the vehicle, they realized the 2-year-old girl was also not breathing. The grandmother called 911. The family also contacted their friend, who returned from the hospital to take the girl there as well.Both children were pronounced dead at the hospital. While the medical examiner will determine the official cause of death, police believe hypothermia was the primary cause. The temperature inside the parking garage was below freezing. The hospital notified police of the children's deaths around 12:47 p.m. Monday. The case remains under investigation and will be presented to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan emphasized the tragedy, stating, 'This is a terrible day in Detroit as we deal with the tragic loss of two young people, and it's gotta make us rethink everything that we're doing.' He called for a review of the family's case and the city's homelessness services, including the call center and public information policy. Mayor Duggan also expressed a desire to implement a policy requiring outreach workers to conduct site visits for cases involving minors.
