Volunteers give out hundreds of free turkeys one week before Thanksgiving.

"They said we're getting a turkey and a basket. I don't know what's in the basket, but I'm glad we're getting the turkey anyway,” says Benedetto Valise, of Huntington."To help someone who is willing to sacrifice everything to protect us and protect our way of life, it's an honor," says Michael Haynes, with Long Island Cares.

In addition to the frozen turkeys, veterans will be getting all the traditional Thanksgiving fixings for their dinner table - including mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. "It's a great help. Living here on Long Island is very expensive so any little bit helps, so I do appreciate it,” says John Moloney, of Bay Shore.

According to Island Harvest Food Bank, food insecurity is increasing on Long Island. More than 200,000 Long Islanders are considered food insecure. The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department also held a turkey drive Thursday in Yaphank for families in need. "Turkey, some sides and a dessert, we take that for granted, they don't, they look forward to it,” says Danielle Donaphin, with New Hour For Women and Children. The Bethpage Turkey Drive takes place Friday morning at the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Headquarters.
