During a severe storm, a Tucson man named Derek Renfro, experiencing homelessness and medical issues, finds himself battling the elements. A kind stranger, Beverley Tidwell, discovers him and offers him shelter, sparking a wave of community support.

Tucson is bracing for another week of freezing temperatures overnight, posing a serious threat to the city's unhoused population. Derek Renfro, a man seeking medical care and warmer weather, found himself fighting for survival under a bench at Loma Verde Park during last week's storm. The 60 mph wind gusts and relentless rain compounded his existing condition of severe neck stenosis, leaving him unable to feel the left side of his body from the cold.

'I didn't know what was going to happen to me. I thought I might die under there,' Renfro recounted.Just when his hope seemed to dwindle, Beverley Tidwell, a woman Renfro had encountered at the park, came to his rescue. Touched by his plight, she offered him shelter on her porch, a sanctuary from the biting cold. 'I was like I can't leave Derek out there. If I go there in the morning and he suffered exposure, that'll be my fault,' Tidwell said. The kindness didn't stop there. Neighbors rallied around, providing food, coffee, blankets, and clothes. 'It takes a village, really, to help someone,' Tidwell remarked, as she ushered Renfro inside. Even amidst the challenges, Renfro found solace in the unexpected generosity he encountered in Tucson. 'If this had been any of the other places that I've been through trying to do this, I would still be under the bench down there,' he said, reflecting on his experience. This heartwarming story serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers extreme weather poses to the city's vulnerable population. As temperatures continue to plummet, the need for compassion and support becomes ever more urgent.
