President Donald Trump plans to attend the opening of 'Alligator Alcatraz' in Florida on Tuesday.
WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 27: U.S. President Donald Trump answers questions during a press conference on recent Supreme Court rulings in the briefing room at the White House on June 27, 2025 in Washington, DC.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that individual judges cannot grant nationwide injunctions to block executive orders, including the injunction on President Trump’s effort to eliminate birthright citizenship in the U.S. The justices did not rule on Trump’s order to end birthright citizenship but stopped his order from taking effect for 30 days. The remote detention center being built in Florida is a partnership with the state and the federal government. The facility would be used to house illegal migrants as they await deportation. The holding facility gets its nickname from the remote location in the everglades. A large wetland filled with alligators, crocodiles and pythons that provides a natural barrier so inmates cannot escape. According to reports the facility is projected to cost $450 million a year which will come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Shelter and Services Program. On Saturday environmental activists and others protested on part of the U.S. Highway 41 that cuts through the Everglades.
