On Monday afternoon, President Joe Biden said in a statement: 'Today, families in Madison, Wisconsin, are grieving the loss of those who were killed and wounded at Abundant Life Christian School. It's shocking and unconscionable. We need Congress to act. Now. From Newtown to Uvalde, Parkland to Madison, to so many other shootings that don't receive attention – it is unacceptable that we are unable to protect our children from this scourge of gun violence. We cannot continue to accept it as normal.' On Monday morning, a 15-year-old student shot and killed a teacher and another student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, police said. The shooter, identified as Natalie Rupnow, also injured six others before dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound when officers arrived at the scene shortly before 11 a.m. Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha, was a student at the school, which serves approximately 390 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Later Monday, Emilie Simons, the White House senior deputy press secretary, posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, that White House officials are 'in touch with local counterparts in Madison to provide support as needed.' The website for the anti-violence organization Everytown for Gun Safety reports at least 202 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in 2024, resulting in 56 deaths and 147 injuries.
