Former President Trump indicates a 90-day extension for TikTok, while the app threatens to shut down due to lack of clarity on enforcement.

Former President Donald Trump spoke to NBC News' Kristen Welker in an exclusive phone interview on Saturday, addressing his plans regarding the popular social media app TikTok. Trump stated that a 90-day extension, allowed under a bipartisan law passed last year, is a likely course of action. He emphasized the need for careful consideration due to the significant implications of the situation. 'I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at.

The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it's appropriate. You know, it's appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It's a very big situation,' Trump said during the phone interview. The fate of TikTok has been a pressing issue in the final days of the Biden administration, leaving millions of U.S. users anticipating a resolution. While the Biden administration has repeatedly asserted its intention not to enforce the law, shifting the responsibility to Trump, TikTok expressed on Friday that such assurances might not be sufficient to prevent the app from shutting down. TikTok asserted that the White House's statements lacked the necessary clarity and assurance to guarantee its continued operation in the U.S. 'Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19,' the company stated. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre characterized TikTok's planned shutdown as a 'stunt' in a statement released on Saturday morning. 'We have seen the most recent statement from TikTok. It is a stunt, and we see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take actions in the next few days before the Trump Administration takes office on Monday,' she said. 'We have laid out our position clearly and straightforwardly: actions to implement this law will fall to the next administration. So TikTok and other companies should take up any concerns with them,' she emphasized.Trump's stance on TikTok has evolved over time. He previously attempted to ban both TikTok and the Chinese messaging app WeChat, citing concerns over ByteDance's ties to the Chinese government. This attempt was subsequently blocked by the courts. Furthermore, Trump had requested the Supreme Court to temporarily halt the law, seeking additional time for his administration to explore alternative solutions to the app's potential ban. 'The Supreme Court decision was expected, and everyone must respect it. My decision on TikTok will be made in the not too distant future, but I must have time to review the situation. Stay tuned!' he stated. In the past, Trump has indicated his willingness to permit the app's continued availability in the U.S., highlighting the substantial number of views his own TikTok accounts receive. Prior to the Supreme Court ruling, Biden administration officials signaled their intention not to enforce the law on Sunday, the final day of Biden's term.
