Ed Martin, 54, took over the top D.C. federal prosecutor role Jan. 21 and immediately began reshaping the office in a way that aligned with Trump’s preferences.

“Since Inauguration Day, Ed has been doing a great job as Interim U.S. Attorney, fighting tirelessly to restore Law and Order, and make our Nation’s Capital Safe and Beautiful Again. He will get the job done,” Trump posted Monday morning on his Truth Social account about the nomination. Originally from St. Louis, Martin is a longtime conservative lawyer and supporter of Trump. He served last year as deputy policy director of the Republican National Convention’s platform committee and has been outspoken in his calls for a national ban on abortion without exception for rape or incest.

Trump has spoken often of his desire to take closer control over the District and plans to sign an executive order cracking down on crime and banning homeless camps. As U.S. attorney for D.C., Martin could be a key ally in those efforts. Because the District is not a state, the federal government has outsize influence on its functions, and most of its criminal cases are handled through Martin’s office. Juvenile cases are handled by office of the D.C.

Under Biden, they chose politics over police.
