President Trump, who campaigned against foreign wars, has launched a new military conflict in Iran, marking a significant change in his approach to foreign policy. This action, following military operations in Venezuela, contradicts his previous promises to avoid new wars and has sparked controversy and concern.

Donald Trump , having campaigned against the long and draining wars of his predecessors to win the presidency in both 2016 and 2024, has now initiated a significant conflict of his own. His rise to power in 2016 was fueled by criticism of the Bush family and the Iraq War, promising to keep the U.S. out of foreign entanglements.

However, into his second term, Trump has ordered military action in multiple countries, including the operation to capture Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and the war in Iran, which is the most significant conflict since the post-9/11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This decision was made without congressional approval. The White House justified the operation, citing Iran's alleged threat to the U.S. and its troops. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the Iranian regime has killed and maimed thousands of American citizens and soldiers over the years and this ends with President Trump. The Trump administration's foreign policy is grounded in the idea that presidents for nearly 50 years have been talking about but had no courage to confront: Iran poses a direct and imminent threat to the United States. Trump's 2024 campaign success was based in large part on him not having started any wars in his first term, an observation echoed by his future vice president, JD Vance, who noted that Trump resisted pressure to engage in conflicts. This reflected a contrast to what the hawkishness of Mr. Trump’s predecessors. While Trump initially suggested the war with Iran wouldn't be endless, he later indicated a longer engagement, stating he doesn't get bored with it. Trump outlined four objectives for Operation Epic Fury: degrading Iran’s missile capabilities, destroying Iran’s navy, preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, and containing its proxy forces by stopping their support of terrorist activities abroad. This war with Iran began shortly after the military operation in Venezuela. His stance with Iran includes withdrawing from the nuclear treaty negotiated by Barack Obama, killing Iranian military official Qassem Soleimani in an airstrike, and bombing Iran's nuclear facilities. Trump repeatedly stated that Iran cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, using this as justification for military operations. He expressed skepticism towards foreign intervention and, specifically, wars in the Middle East long before entering politics, criticizing the Iraq War and alleging that Obama would resort to military aggression for political gain. His 2016 campaign built on this sentiment, rejecting the interventionist foreign policy of the Republican establishment and opposing figures like Jeb Bush, the brother of the president who started the Iraq War
