Joe Biden is forming a public health advisory committee, which will help the campaign minimize its risks amid the coronavirus pandemic
, President Donald Trump blamed Europe for the worsening coronavirus outbreak, imposed a set of sweeping travel restrictions and sowed confusion among the health care industries at the center of the nation’s response effort.
What he didn’t do: Calm a nation increasingly on edge over the pandemic, or offer a domestic health strategy for slowing a disease that’s spread largely undetected within U.S. borders for weeks.amid climbing cases throughout the continent. But public health experts quickly noted that the restrictions will do nothing to stop the community spread already present within the U.S. — and that unlike here, Europe’s numbers have shot up in part because it’s able to test widely for the virus.
It was a misstatement that — if true — would have threatened the drug supply chain and access to key materials needed for coronavirus tests. The administration later clarified that the ban applies only to "most foreign nationals."as well as waive co-payments — an assertion that shocked an industry where many insurers have pledged to cover testing costs, yet not all have committed to eliminating co-pays for the related office visits.
“For testing. Not for treatment,” an AHIP spokesperson told POLITICO. “[It’s] important to remember there is no treatment for COVID-19 yet, just treating to relieve symptoms as you would for flu.” The White House said afterward that the president was repeating a Tuesday announcement, where insurance executives pledged to waive cost-sharing for coronavirus diagnostics. It also pointed to IRS guidance that newly authorized certain HSA-eligible high-deductible plans to fully cover testing and treatment.
