Two weeks after a Republican National Convention packed with minority speakers programmed in large part to convince voters President Donald Trump is not racist, the President is digging into cultural battles streaked with racial overtones with the clear aim of exploiting the grievances of White voters.
If the contradiction seems head-spinning, the President's political advisers are betting most Americans won't notice. Using an ever-more-sophisticated political data operation to target specific audiences, Trump is hoping to convey two messages at once: one that actively stokes racial divides and fears about urban unrest and another meant to convince Americans he isn't racist at all.
" Having it both waysTrump's actions speak louder than his diverse RNC lineupWhile Trump is cranking up race-based appeals and a law-and-order message at the expense of almost any other approach, the Trump campaign is still trying to have it both ways: amplifying Trump policies and minority voices to make the case that Trump isn't racist, while also stirring fears about unrest in American cities.
