President Trump urges Russian President Putin to negotiate a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine, threatening economic sanctions if negotiations fail. Ukrainian human rights lawyer Oleksandra Matviichuk believes this is a crucial opportunity to bring a definitive end to the conflict and prevent Putin from achieving his geopolitical goals.

President Donald Trump is urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which commenced nearly three years ago. Throughout his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump frequently emphasized his commitment to ending major global conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war, drawing inspiration from former President Ronald Reagan's 'peace through strength' doctrine.

Now in office, Trump is making it unequivocally clear that the time for diplomatic engagement is now. 'I’m not looking to hurt Russia,' Trump stated in a post on his Truth Social platform. However, he simultaneously issued a warning, threatening 'high levels of taxes, tariffs and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States.' This assertive stance follows reports indicating growing concern within Putin's administration regarding Russia's economic performance amidst the protracted war in Ukraine.Ukrainian human rights lawyer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Oleksandra Matviichuk, believes that Trump's current position presents a crucial opportunity to exert strength and bring about a definitive end to the conflict. 'Russia’s relentless invasion demands lasting international security guarantees. Any peace deal must confront Russia’s hostility to safeguard Ukraine and the very foundations of freedom and democracy,' Matviichuk asserted in a statement. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Matviichuk underscored the importance of achieving not only a cessation of hostilities, which commenced in February 2022, but also of preventing Putin from realizing his 'geopolitical goal.' She contends that the Russian leader demonstrably lacks genuine interest in peace. 'When we design this peace process, we have to design security guarantees, which will make this goal for Putin impossible to achieve,' Matviichuk emphasized.During a Thursday press conference at the White House, Trump informed reporters that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has conveyed his willingness to engage in negotiations aimed at ending the war. In his initial sit-down interview since returning to the White House, Trump disclosed to 'Hannity' that Zelenskyy has reached his limit. Nevertheless, while Trump condemned Putin's actions, he simultaneously criticized Zelenskyy, stating that the Ukrainian leader is 'no angel' for persisting in combat rather than pursuing a negotiated settlement. Reuters reported in November that Putin is open to discussing a peace plan, potentially agreeing to a freeze of the conflict along existing lines. Since Putin's 2022 invasion, civilians in Ukraine have been compelled to adapt to life amidst an ongoing war. Matviichuk, who is based in Kyiv, describes it as living in 'total uncertainty.' Her primary focus, however, has been on exposing Russia's atrocities. Nearly three years into the war, she has meticulously cataloged approximately 80,000 Russian crimes. 'We don’t want to live in Putin’s world,' Matviichuk stated. 'We want to live in a world where democracy and rule of law and freedom are respected.
