Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump's nominee for envoy to Ukraine and Russia, clarified Trump's intentions regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump 's nominee for envoy to Ukraine and Russia, stated in an interview that the president-elect is 'not trying to give something to Putin.' This statement to Fox News on January 8th was in response to Trump's suggestion that Ukraine's NATO aspirations provoked Vladimir Putin's invasion, despite discussions about Kyiv joining NATO beginning 16 years before the war's onset.

Newsweek reached out to the Trump transition team and the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment. Kellogg's assertion that Trump is 'trying to save Ukraine' rather than appease Putin holds significance due to the president-elect's close relationship with the Russian leader and the potential impact his dealings with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will have on peace negotiations. Kellogg emphasized the casualties endured by both countries and Trump's desire for a swift resolution, stating, 'People need to understand that he's not trying to give something to Putin or to the Russians. He's actually trying to save Ukraine and save their sovereignty and he's going to make sure that it's equitable, that it's fair, and he said that repeatedly, both when Zelensky met him at Trump Tower and when he said it at his press conferences.' He further compared Trump's approach to the Biden administration's, noting that Trump engages with both adversaries and allies. Kellogg, like Trump, has previously criticized the Biden administration's handling of the Ukraine war. He argued that the White House should have negotiated a deal with Putin before the invasion, delaying Ukraine's NATO membership for a decade in exchange for halting the incursion. In a co-authored paper with Fred Fleitz for the America First Policy Institute, Kellogg advocated for arming Ukraine contingent upon its participation in peace talks with Russia. Prior to Trump's reelection, Kellogg co-authored a report outlining a strategy to end the war, including a ceasefire along existing front lines and conditional aid based on Kyiv's willingness to engage in peace talks with Moscow. Given Kellogg's crucial role in mediating peace negotiations, he has expressed hope for ending the war within 100 days, despite Trump's declaration that peace talks wouldn't commence until after his inauguration. Kellogg's Fox News interview followed news of his postponed trip to Kyiv until after Trump's inauguration later this month. The retired U.S. Army lieutenant general and former acting national security advisor has reportedly rescheduled the meeting, though the new date remains unannounced. Melinda Haring, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, commented on X, formerly known as Twitter, 'Trump's Ukraine/Russia special envoy @generalkellogg says we've misunderstood Trump. He isn't trying to give something to Putin. He's trying to save Ukraine. Kellogg gets points for skillfully stepping around Trump's false claims about Ukraine and NATO.' Following his interview, Kellogg wrote, 'Thank you @SandraSmithFox @AmericaRpts for having me on. It is always timely and professional. There are big changes in leadership and diplomacy coming soon.' Kellogg's role in upcoming peace talks with Russia and Ukraine remains a key point of interest, with the timing of these negotiations yet to be determined following Trump's inauguration
