Former President Trump expressed support for Rep. Mike Johnson's bid to become House Speaker, while Rep. Thomas Massie firmly stated his opposition to Johnson's reelection. Johnson, facing a slim majority in the House, can only afford to lose two votes in Friday's election. Massie's 'no' vote is certain, and while Majority Whip Steve Scalise stated he is unaware of any other dissenting votes, the race remains tight.
“Good luck today for Speaker Mike Johnson , a fine man of great ability, who is very close to having 100% support,” Trump
“A win for Mike today will be a big win for the Republican Party, and yet another acknowledgment of our 129 year most consequential Presidential Election!! — A BIG AFFIRMATION, INDEED. MAGA!” Trump continued. Last month, a number of House Republicans voted against a bipartisan deal to continue funding the government through March, effectively killing the legislation. House Democrats ended up supplying the needed votes to keep the government open, voting in favor of a slimmed down version.
Republicans are expected to enter the 119th Congress with just a one-seat majority, with Republicans in control 219-215. With that slim majority, Johnson can only afford to lose two votes in Friday’s election, and Rep. Thomas Massie is already firmly voting “no” on retaining Johnson. “You can pull all my fingernails off, you can shove bamboo up them, you can start cutting off my fingers, I am not voting for Mike Johnson tomorrow,” Massie said. “And you can take that to the bank.”to back Johnson’s reelection. Majority Whip Steve Scalise also said he is unaware of anyone else besides Massie who is not backing Johnson.
