Former President Donald Trump attempted to remove Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chair Ellen Weintraub, claiming to do so through a letter dated January 31st. Weintraub, who has served as a commissioner since 2002, asserted that Trump's attempt was illegal and that she remains committed to her role.

Ellen Weintraub, the chair of the Federal Election Commission (FEC), stated that former President Donald Trump attempted to remove her from the agency. Weintraub revealed on Thursday evening via X (formerly Twitter) that she had received a letter dated January 31st from Trump, claiming to dismiss her as both Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. Accompanying her post was a copy of the dismissal letter signed by Trump.

\Weintraub asserted that 'There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it.' She has served as a commissioner since 2002 and her current term expired in April 2007. Despite this, she has continued to serve and has held the chair position in 2003, 2013, and 2019. In December, she was elected chair for a fourth time. According to federal law, FEC commissioners are appointed for six-year terms and can remain in their positions until a replacement is nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. \Weintraub expressed in her post that she remains committed to serving the American people, stating, 'I've been lucky to serve the American people & stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.' When contacted for comment, Harrison Fields, principal deputy press secretary at the White House, said, 'Our message to Ellen Weintraub is simple: you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here. The President has made a decision on who he'd like to chair the Federal Election Commission (FEC), and it's not her. Grandstanding over this decision won't change the President's mind.' The FEC's press office declined to comment on Weintraub's post. Weintraub, in an interview with The New York Times published Thursday, stated that she was 'not really surprised' by Trump's attempt to dismiss her. She pointed to numerous complaints filed against Trump and her vocal criticism of his claims about mail-in voting fraud in 2020, asserting that she was 'not really surprised that I am on their radar.
