Federal Election Commission (FEC) Chair Ellen Weintraub said President Donald Trump is attempting to remove her from the body unlawfully. Weintraub posted a letter she claimed was from Trump on social media platform X, stating that her service to Americans will continue despite the attempt to remove her. The letter, dated January 31, states that Weintraub is removed as a member of the FEC effective immediately. The FEC's website, however, does not list Weintraub as a current commissioner.
Federal Election Commission Commissioner Ellen Weintraub testifies during a hearing before House Administration Committee at Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill on September 20, 2023 in Washington, D.C.
“Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner & Chair of @FEC. There’s a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn’t it,” the post reads. “I’ve been lucky to serve the American people & stir up some good trouble along the way. That’s not changing anytime soon." “She believes that strong and fair regulation of money in politics is important to prevent corruption and maintain the faith of the American people in their democracy,” her biography says. “Weintraub sounded the alarm early–and continues to do so–regarding the potential for corporate and ‘dark-money’ spending to become a vehicle for foreign influence in our elections.”
Our message to Ellen Weintraub is simple: you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here," Fields said. "The President has made a decision on who he’d like to chair the , and it’s not her."
