Torrential downpours are moving ashore in South Texas amid a tropical rainstorm that will unleash a slew of impacts. It’s the United States’ first taste of tropical trouble in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, butWhile approaching the coast of northeast Mexico, the potential tropical storm was pushing a surge of ocean water ashore, leading to coastal flooding along the southern Texas coast early Wednesday.
Rockport was gusting to 36 mph around 7 a.m. Central time, and Padre Island to 39 mph. Rainfall totals have been light thus far, with Brownsville leading the pack at 0.95 inches. That said, the core of the deep tropical moisture, and subsequent downpours, will soon arrive. Satellite and aircraft observations do indicate that the broader low-pressure system is in the process of developing a more well-defined center of circulation. Shower and thunderstorm activity hasn’t filled in around that nascent center, however.Scattered downpours were pivoting ashore in South Texas, and will become more numerous and intense as the day wears on.
