SAN ANTONIO - All eyes remain on the southwestern Gulf of Mexico in the coming days for the possibility of gradual tropical development with a broad area of low
pressure developing. This forecast scenario for next week presents a golden opportunity for South Texas to see needed rain and cooler temperatures too.
As of today, the southwestern gulf remains unimpressive with only scattered clouds and a couple showers. As we progress through Father's Day weekend, the emergence of a little energy swirling into the southwest gulf should be able to fire up scattered storms in a disorganized manner. A broad weak area of low pressure should begin to develop by Monday in response with some tropical rain reaching toward the upper Texas coast well north of the low.
All data signals continue to point toward a potential tropical depression forming well south of Brownsville, TX then moving west into Mexico. An outside chance of a tropical storm remains too . On the surface, this seems less than favorable for rain chances but it appears the moisture field well north of the system would be expansive and able to cover much of South Texas with quality rain.
The highest rainfall amounts will be in Deep South Texas from Laredo, Corpus Christi to Brownsville and along the coast but even our area will see at least some rain. In addition to the rain chances ahead, temperatures would be held down and in some cases, well below normal temperatures are possible. In our region, we catch some rain to be sure with a north to south gradient on how much across our viewing area. We also see cooler temperatures later next week.
Keep in mind, any shift north in development could alter the forecast and subsequent rainfall amounts. Same can be said if it develops even further south.
