Murder charges have been filed against three reputed gang members this week, nearly two years after a West Garfield Park neighborhood man was killed in a shootout during an attempted carjacking outside his home.
Jimmy Walker, 21, and Malik Boyd, 19, were each held without bond during a hearing Wednesday following their arrest on charges of first-degree murder, attempted robbery and attempted vehicular hijacking stemming from the 2020 killing of 50-year-old Robert Johnson.
According to Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy, Johnson was a licensed gun owner and was escorting his fiance to her vehicle across the street from their home in the 4700 block of West Fulton Street just before 2 a.m on April 7, 2020. Walker then pointed a black handgun at Johnson and his fiance, who attempted to duck and hide inside the SUV, Murphy said. As she did, she heard multiple gunshots and when she looked up, she found Johnson laying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest and the defendants speeding off in their sedan.According to Murphy, investigators tracked the sedan through surveillance video as it headed to West Suburban Hospital a couple miles from the shooting.
