Mexican citizen acquitted of Kate Steinle’s murder pleads guilty to federal gun charges

Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate faces decades in prison when he is sentenced in June.

SAN FRANCISCO – Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate has pleaded guilty to federal firearm charges in the July 2015 shooting death of Kate Steinle in San Francisco, according to the U.S Attorney’s Office.

Without a plea agreement, Garcia-Zarate admitted that on July 1, 2015, he was at San Francisco Embarcadero Pier 14 and possessed a loaded semi-automatic pistol, prosecutors said. He also reportedly admitted that he knew he was unlawfully in the country at the time and had previously been convicted of illegal re-entry after deportation.
