The trial for a restaurant owner accused of using Covid relief funds for his own personal expenses, is scheduled to begin Monday in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Court.

CLEVELAND , Ohio - The trial for a restaurant owner accused of using Covid relief funds for his own personal expenses, is scheduled to begin Monday in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Court. Marcelo Fadul Neves has pleaded not guilty to 15 charges, including aggravated theft, for allegedly illegally spending $800,000 in Federal Revitalization Funds.

Neves is also accused of writing bad checks to multiple people, including employees of his restaurants, for a total of over $140,000 from 2020-2024.Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley said when Neves applied for the federal money for Crop Bistro in Cleveland, the restaurant was already closed and was not reopened. O’Malley said Neves then used some of the money to purchase Bistro on the Falls in Olmsted Falls, which has also since closed. “This man has scammed a lot of people, and I wouldn’t pass him to try and scam the government,” said Lissette Ponce, a former Bistro on the Falls employee who is also an alleged victim of fraud in this case. “I am more than happy to see that justice will finally get served.” Neves, 59, was arrested in March by the US Secret Service Money Laundering Task Force with assistance from the Westlake Police Department. “We have seen numerous examples of citizens using COVID Relief Funds for improper purposes,” said O’Malley. “This case is one of the most egregious.”Imposters posing as law enforcement targeting Portage County residents Babysitter left child without food or water for up to 21 hours until parents came home, investigators sayWind gust make repairs difficult for power crews
