Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a voluntary recall of several canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect that could lead to botulism. The recall affects products sold under various brand names in numerous states.

Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a voluntary recall of several canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect that could lead to botulism, a serious form of food poisoning. The recall was initiated on February 7th out of an abundance of caution, following notification from a Tri-Union Seafoods supplier about a potential issue with the easy-open pull tab can lids.

The company stated that the manufacturing defect could compromise the integrity of the product seal, allowing for leakage or contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism. Botulism is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by a toxin that affects the body's nerves. Symptoms can include difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, double vision, drooping eyelids, blurry vision, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, and problems with eye movement. The recalled Tri-Union Seafoods products were sold under various brand names, including Genova, H-E-B, Trader Joe's, and Van Camp's, in retail stores across more than two dozen states and Washington, D.C. The FDA identified specific product details, including can codes, best-if-used-by dates, and UPC numbers, for consumers to identify affected products. Tri-Union Seafoods urged consumers not to use recalled products even if they appear or smell normal, and to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms of botulism. The company emphasized that this recall only affects the identified products and that no other Tri-Union Seafoods products are impacted by this potential defect. Customers with recalled cans can return them to the retailer for a full refund, dispose of them properly, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.
