Trey Lance had some good moments, but deplorable playing conditions and even worse team discipline were not enough to insulate the first-year starter.

It was anything but a storybook start to Trey Lance’s tenure as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.

A flooded field and abysmal Niners execution will create a flood of abysmal takes on the young quarterback’s performance in the 49ers’ season debut, a 19-10 loss to the Bears. To be clear, Lance was hardly inspiring in the downpour. His fourth-quarter interception set up the Bears’ third touchdown of the second half — capping a 19-0 run that lost the Niners the game. The Niners’ offense only saw bursts of rhythm against a Chicago defense that was selling out at the line of scrimmage.

The first-year starting quarterback was merely part of the 49ers’ prodigious problems on Sunday. San Francisco had 12 penalties — including four personal fouls — and some egregious defensive breakdowns. Those are more responsible for the loss. But pair that with Lance’s play, and the Niners had one of the more embarrassing team performances in the Kyle Shanahan era.On The Ground:The 49ers had total control of the contest and a 10-0 lead that should have been much better. Lance went 7-of-18 in the second half and — regardless of the terrible conditions — provided little spark once the Niners fell behind.
