The last time Trey Lance broke training camp as the unquestioned No. 1 quarterback he opened the season against the Bears. Their defense was, ahem, barely a match for Lance, who accounted for four touchdowns while also running for 143 yards in a 39-28 victory.
As Lance prepares to make just his third NFL start, and his first since unseating Jimmy Garoppolo in the off-season, let’s take a closer look at what his first test as San Francisco’s franchise quarterback entails.The first thing we realize is both Lance and the Bears defense have been on equal footing while preparing for Sunday’s game – neither really knows a whole lot about the other.
Bears first-year head coach Matt Eberflus found game-planning against the 22-year-old Lance so challenging he opted to use some non-quarterbacks to help his defense prepare for Lance’s speed and athleticism. .
