Travis County Sees First Decline in Drug Deaths in Three Years

Travis County officials attribute the slight decline in drug deaths, from 314 to 255 from January to July, to the use of Narcan, a drug used to reverse opioid overdoses. Fentanyl-related deaths have also decreased from 180 to 134 in the same period.

Overdoses are still the number one cause of accidental death here in Travis County,” Travis County Judge Andy Brown said."But we need to take a moment to recognize that investing in people and resources and Narcan and things like that are starting, hopefully, to make a difference."available in every Austin-Travis County EMS ambulance. Travis County leaders said providing health care services to people exiting jail could also help lower drug deaths. People leaving jail are eight times more likely to die of an overdose in the first six months following their release than anyone else in the community, according to Travis County.
