Travis County commissioners voted to put a tax rate hike on the ballot. If approved, it could cost the average homeowner an additional $126 annually.
Travis County will ask voters this fall to approve a tax rate hike to raise money for child care and after-school programs.
Commissioners estimate the tax increase would generate more than $75 million to expand affordable child care options and help child care providers that are set to lose federal funding from the pandemic in 2026. Travis County Judge Andy Brown said the new spots will fill a massive gap in available options for low-income families. He estimates almost 3,000 kids under 3 lack access to child care, and there’s a two-year-long waitlist for affordable child care. The county also plans to offer employers incentives to help workers in households that make above that 85% MFI threshold.
