Access to affordable and nutritious food is a growing problem in Austin. More than 14% of people in Travis County experience food insecurity. To help solve that problem Austin and Travis County are preparing to vote on a first-ever regional food plan.
Access to affordable and nutritious food is a growing problem in Austin. More than 14% of people in Travis County experience food insecurity. To help solve that problem Austin and Travis County are preparing to vote on a“This draft food plan sets a vision for the next five years outlining goals and strategies for preserving farmland, supporting local agriculture, ensuring fair wages for food workers, and improving food disaster preparedness,” said Austin Deputy City Manager Jon Fortune. On Tuesday, the Austin City Council got its first look at what could be the future of food for over a million people. “Land, is absolutely the single most important thing,” said Edwin Marty, Food Policy Manager for the City of Austin. Marty says less than 1% of the food consumed locally is produced locally. Changing that will require making dedicated farmland a budget priority. “We will not get to make decisions about land access and land preservation in years to come. That land will be covered with concrete,” said Marty.ALSO| City of Austin moving forward with two finalists for police chief“The land is going to go away if we don’t buy it and we have no dollars,” said Alter. Most federal grants even require a local match. Moving forward with the regional food plan will likely mean private investments and out-of-the-box thinking. “If it was easy and if it was just profitable on its own, we would be surrounded by neighborhoods with farms. That is not the case. It is going to be a little bit more complicated,” said Marty. The next step in pushing the food plan forward is having Austin and Travis County vote on the goals and strategies. Those votes are expected next month.
