The crash occurred near the Potomac River around 8:30 p.m. ET, with the aircraft descending into the water. Among the passengers on board the doomed American Airlines Flight 5342 were Russian figure-skating coaches and spouses Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov.
The couple was well-known in the figure skating community and had trained numerous skaters, including Maxim Naumov, their son who is a competitive figure skater for the U.S. Shishkova and Naumov, both Olympic competitors and World Champions in pairs skating, had recently attended a national developmental camp in Wichita, Kansas, in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships where Maxim competed.A teammate of Maxim's stated that he had left Wichita on Monday, and the last words Shishkova and Naumov expressed to their son were that they were 'proud' of him. Shishkova and Naumov's passing has deeply affected the figure skating community, with many expressing their condolences and remembering their contributions to the sport.The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the helicopter was on a training flight when the collision occurred. There were 60 passengers and four crew members on board the American Eagle Flight 5342 en route from Wichita to Washington, D.C. An estimated 300 first responders were on the scene in frigid temperatures and icy waters. The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services reported that 27 bodies had been recovered from the plane and one from the helicopter.
