Houston track coach Leroy Burrell to lead program at Auburn

Leroy Burrell, a former Olympian who once held the title as “Fastest Man in the World” and returned to his alma mater to lead the University of Houston to 44 track and field conference titles but experienced unfathomable tragedy with the loss of his son less than a year ago, announced Thursday he will leave the program to become the head coach at Auburn.

After taking over for legendary head coach Tom Tellez in 1999, Burrell began a historic run and coached 11 Olympians, 15 NCAA champions, 254 All-Americans and 353 individual conference champions during 23 years with the Cougars. He won 44 conference championships during stays in Conference USA and the American Athletic Conference and was a 37-time conference coach of the year.

Beginning as a 18-year-old recruit, Burrell said he “grew up and realized all my dreams at (the University of Houston” as he led the Cougars to national prominence. “For more than 34 years, I poured everything I had into Cougar Track and Field as a student-athlete, alumnus and coach,” Burrell said in a statement released by the school. “Before August last year, my intention was to continue to lead the program, but that all changed when I lost my son, Cameron, on Aug 9, 2021.”
