Metroparks Police Chief Kelly Stillman has told 19 News Anchor Nichole Vrsansky that trace DNA evidence found at the scene of a 2019 unsolved murder could potentially lead to a suspect.

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio - Metroparks Police Chief Kelly Stillman has told 19 News Anchor Nichole Vrsansky that trace DNA evidence found at the scene of a 2019 unsolved murder could potentially lead to a suspect.

Wednesday marks six years since Carnell Sledge and Kate Brown were shot and killed sitting on a park bench in the Metroparks in broad daylight, yet no one saw a thing.“We have sent evidence for DNA comparison but nothing’s come back in our favor yet,” says Chief Stillman.“Trace, meaning, trace. It could be anything,” says Chief Stillman.“We have just about every bit of evidence that we could have collected from that scene,” the chief explained. “So when you go though it, you may find something like, ‘Oh my God, here it is.’”“He’s just as much a suspect as anyone else has been a suspect,” says Chief Stillman. That spot is a five minute drive from the park bench in the Rocky River Reservation where Kate and Carnell were killed. “When we get something that happens in the Metroparks in close proximity, we always dive into it as much as we can to see if there’s any correlation,” says Chief Stillman. Among the biggest pieces of evidence detectives have in Kate and Carnell’s murder are shell casings found at the scene.“You don’t have to do ballistics, that is not our murder weapon,” says Chief Stillman. Chief Stillman says it could take up to a year vet any potential connection Hurt may have to this case. Both the Brown and the Sledge families say they do not know Hurt or recognize him as anyone Kate or Carnell would have known. Chief Stillman says there are other people detectives look into as well, including the only potential witness to the murder, a roofer who was sitting in his truck on that June 4 night with a clear view of Kate and Carnell.Six years now without an arrest, without justice for Kate and Carnell or their families, who feel their loss every day.
