Edmunds compares the popular Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid to determine the best compact hybrid SUV. The comparison covers performance, fuel economy, technology, features, and pricing.
Hybrid SUVs are having a moment, and two popular choices are the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid . The RAV4 Hybrid has long been a favorite for its excellent fuel economy and roomy interior, but the Tucson Hybrid is a strong contender with its sleek design, modern tech, and powerful performance. Edmunds pitted these two compact hybrid SUVs against each other to see which one came out on top.
Powering the RAV4 Hybrid is a four-cylinder engine paired with a hybrid system that produces 219 horsepower. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds and delivers an impressive EPA-estimated 39 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The Tucson Hybrid utilizes a more powerful hybrid powertrain based on a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, generating 231 horsepower and achieving a slightly quicker 0-60 mph time of 7.7 seconds. However, the Hyundai delivers a lower combined fuel economy of 38 mpg in the base Blue trim level and 35 mpg in other trims. Both SUVs come standard with advanced driver assist features like emergency automatic braking and lane keeping assistance. The Tucson Hybrid offers a more advanced highway driving assist system and a larger 12.3-inch driver display and center touchscreen. The RAV4 Hybrid starts with an 8-inch center touchscreen but offers a larger 10.5-inch unit. Wireless smartphone connectivity is standard on both vehicles, but the Tucson Hybrid includes a wireless smartphone charger as standard, while it's an optional feature on the Toyota. Both offer comfortable seats and a smooth ride, but the Tucson Hybrid's seats are more plush, and the Hyundai has a quieter hybrid powertrain. Passenger space is similar in both vehicles, with the Tucson Hybrid offering slightly more rear legroom. Cargo space is also comparable, with the Tucson Hybrid offering slightly more at 38.7 cubic feet compared to the RAV4 Hybrid's 37.6 cubic feet. The RAV4 Hybrid has a starting price of $33,295 for the base LE trim and goes up to $41,600 for the top Limited trim. The Tucson Hybrid's base Blue trim starts at $34,815, and the top Limited trim is priced at $42,645. The Tucson's higher base price is justified by more standard features, including heated front seats, a larger center touchscreen, and a hands-free power liftgate. The top trims also offer more features on the Tucson, such as a 360-degree camera system, a panoramic sunroof, and a heated steering wheel
