A total lunar eclipse is scheduled for early Tuesday morning, but cloud cover is expected to obstruct the view for much of western Washington, including the Seattle area. Eastern Washington communities may have better viewing conditions. The eclipse will begin around 1:50 a.m., with totality starting at 3:04 a.m. The moon will appear red during totality due to Rayleigh scattering.
A total lunar eclipse is set to take place early Tuesday morning and, weather permitting, will be visible across much of North America. Unfortunately, the Seattle area is unlikely to have clear skies for the event.
After a quiet winter and a sunny Monday, clouds are increasing as a March weather system moves into western Washington. A warm front is expected to bring overcast skies overnight, shifting from partly clear conditions to widespread cloud cover after midnight — just as the total lunar eclipse begins over the region. March’s full moon, known as the “Worm Moon,” rose over Puget Sound on Monday evening. Local photographers captured images of it rising over the mountains, the Space Needle and through bare winter tree branches before clouds moved in. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon. Earth’s shadow will begin crossing the moon at 1:50 a.m., with totality starting at 3:04 a.m. The eclipse will peak at 3:34 a.m., and totality will end at 4:04 a.m. Forecasters expect thick cloud cover over the Puget Sound region during the eclipse. Partial glimpses may be possible, but a clear view is unlikely in western Washington. Eastern Washington communities are expected to have a better chance of seeing the eclipse under clearer skies. Eastern Washington will likely offer better viewing of the total lunar eclipse Tuesday morning. Move away from city light pollution for optimal viewing. Shorter blue wavelengths scatter, while longer red and orange wavelengths bend around the planet and illuminate the moon. As one NASA scientist has described it, “all of the world’s sunsets and sunrises are projected onto the lunar surface at once.”If skies are clear, the eclipse will also be visible across Australia, Asia and parts of the Pacific.
