Victoria faces heightened bushfire risk as the Country Fire Authority (CFA) declares a total fire ban for central, north-central, and south-west regions. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a low-intensity heatwave and strong northerly winds, increasing the danger of wildfires. Authorities urge caution and vigilance as they prepare for potential fire outbreaks.
A total fire ban has been declared for central, north-central, and south-west Victoria . The bureau says it has been a long summer of natural disasters and there is still some way to go. Regional Victoria ns are being told to brace for the potential return of bushfire conditions with a total fire ban in place in three regions on Thursday.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has declared a total fire ban for the central, north-central, and south-west areas due to extreme conditions amid continued hot weather. The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a low-intensity heatwave for large parts of Victoria, except for the north-west, until Friday. Strong and gusty northerly winds are expected on Thursday ahead of a milder south-westerly change from the west during the afternoon and evening. CFA deputy chief officer Garry Cook said he hoped the fires would remain under control but authorities were alert to the risk across the state. 'It's the perfect fire day in a sense, in terms of hot northerly winds followed by a south-westerly change,' Mr Cook said. 'We're hopeful that as the cool change progresses across the state it might even have a bit of rain in it.' Extreme heat timetables are in place for numerous V/Line services across the state at the weekend due to the forecast hot weather. Emergency authorities and volunteers in Victoria have endured a tumultuous start to February. Mr Cook said. Temperatures across the state reached 40 degrees in Mildura and 38 in Horsham in the north-west on Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures also peaked at 39 degrees in Dartmoor in south-west Victoria, while Melbourne's top temperature was 36 degrees in Scoresby. Mr Cook said more than 1,200 illegally lit fires had been detected in Victoria over the past five years, including 187 on total fire ban days. He said such fires put the entire community at risk at a time when fuel loads were already dry statewide, particularly in western Victoria. 'Right now, everything is really, really primed in terms of its ability to burn. It's just not good enough that we have got people still lighting fires where the fire danger is that high.
