Victoria Police will not participate in Melbourne's upcoming Pride March after organizers refused its request for members to walk in uniform. The force called the ban 'a backwards step for inclusion', stating that it would prevent LGBTIQA+ employees from celebrating their authentic selves. The decision follows a policy change by Midsumma Festival, which is hosting the march, to ban formal work uniforms after 'unacceptable violence' at last year's event.
Victoria Police will not participate in Melbourne’s upcoming Pride March after organisers refused its request for members to walk in uniform, a ban the force has branded “a backwards step for inclusion”.
“Organisers would only allow police to take part if they wore plain clothes or a branded polo. We believe this would be a backwards step for inclusion, especially from our LGBTIQA+ employees who simply want to celebrate being their authentic selves.” Chief Commissioner Shane Patton later described the protesters as an “ugly rabble” and said it was important the force participated in the march, given it had mistreated the LGBTQ community in the past.“That’s why it’s so important that we show that inclusivity,” he said on ABC Radio
On Tuesday, the festival released a statement outlining its new uniform policy, saying it was a “trauma-informed approach” devised after extensive consultation.“Many members of our LGBTQIA+ communities, especially the most vulnerable within our communities, experience trauma in their lives, which impact upon them today,” organisers said.
