After almost 20 years, William “Goro” Pitchford is closing Godai Sushi Bar & Japanese Restaurant.
Godai Sushi Bar & Japanese Restaurant , one of San Antonio ’s Top 10 sushi destinations, is closing at the end of the month after almost 20 years on West Avenue . The announcement came on the Facebook page of chef and founder William “ Goro ” Pitchford . “This year just took a toll on me mentally and physically,” he wrote, saying that Saturday would be the restaurant’s last day of service. Pitchford’s Facebook page has documented his creative efforts to keep Godai open with modified hours, takeout specials, wine deals and two-for-one sushi deals in the past few years. Godai made the Express-News list of the Top 10 sushi restaurants in San Antonio last year, a list that recounted Pitchford’s legacy dating back to Teriyaki & More in 1998, then Goro’s Sushi in 2000, and finally Godai in 2005.
