Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican who is also running for the U.S. Senate, said he is launching an investigation into abuses of H-1B visas by the state's businesses. H-1B visas are intended for highly skilled, specialized foreign workers who can fill important gaps in the U.
S. workforce. But the Trump administration and its allies across the U.S. have sought to crack down on H-1Bs, saying businesses have used them to hire cheaper foreign workers at the expense of domestic talent. Several Republican-led states have moved to impose restrictions on the hiring of H-1B visa workers at public universities and state agencies. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott ordered a freeze on new H-1B petitions through May 31, 2027, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis directed the state's Board of Governors to end H-1B hiring at public universities. Paxton is focused on reports of scams involving fake companies with sham offices used to fraudulently sponsor H-1B visas. “Any criminal who attempts to scam the H-1B visa program and use ‘ghost offices’ or other fraudulent ploys should be prepared to face the full force of the law,“ Paxton said in a statement. “Abuse and fraud within these programs strip jobs and opportunities away from Texans.“
