The original published version of The Hobbit contradicted the later events of Lord of the Rings, so Tolkien changed it in the most effective way.
The version of The Hobbit that fans know and love is different from the one that was initially published by J.R.R. Tolkien—and the changes significantly impacted the Lord of the Rings' plot. The inconsistencies come from the fact that Tolkien had not yet conceived his plan for LOTR when he wrote Bilbo Baggins' story, and the ring he won from Gollum was just a magical object .
There was no indication in this version of the story that the ring was anything more than a little magical. It was helpful in the plot because Bilbo could use it to make himself invisible . In the same sense, Gollum was a far less piteous creature. As a whole, The Hobbit had been a reasonably short, whimsical tale of a clever hobbit who met with a mysterious creature in a mysterious cave and won a mysterious ring. However, this changed when J.R.R. Tolkien began writing The Lord of the Rings.
If the One Ring was a source of power and terrible temptation, then Gollum shouldn't have been able to offer it as a prize for Bilbo so willingly. The Lord of the Rings changed the ring from a useful trinket to a source of great power. This, in turn, retconned Gollum's character. He no longer seemed like a whimsical creature who enjoyed living in a cave and catching fish. He was a victim of the One Ring—something the established version of The Hobbit just didn't communicate.
