Han and Leia are the perfect Star Wars couple, but their romance was almost ruined by a few short clips in the original Cantina rough-cut.
The original Mos Eisley Cantina sequence in Star Wars almost contained a scene that would have ruined Han and Leia’s relationship in the later films. The Cantina scenes are among the most iconic in the first Star Wars movie, but George Lucas actually shot the sequence twice before being satisfied with it. Most of the Cantina’s interior shots were done in London, over a year before the film’s release.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Given how important the Cantina was for Star Wars’ success, it makes sense why Lucas felt the need to tweak and reshoot it. It needed to have the perfect ambiance in order to show the audience how widely eclectic Lucas’ vision for the galaxy was. Most of A New Hope concerns itself with idealistic characters who fight to overthrow the Empire.
It’s possible Lucas foresaw the potential love triangle between Han, Leia, and Luke, and he therefore removed Han and Jenny’s scenes from the final cut; alternatively, he may have just wanted room to stuff more aliens into the Cantina sequence. In either case, removing Jenny helped save Han from looking like a stereotypical womanizer. So while the Star Wars’ special edition ruined Mos Eisley with heavy-handed CGI, including Jenny in the Cantina could have damaged the franchise far worse.
Han Being A Bigger Womanizer Would've Made His & Leia's Romance Harder Had Jenny remained in A New Hope, the audience may never have rooted for Han and Leia to get together in the first place. One of Han’s nicknames for Leia, “sweetheart,” is also the same nickname he used for Jenny at the bar. If viewers remembered this, and drew the connection, it would have seemed to hint Han cared as little for Leia as he did for Jenny.
