A two-year-old boy has had a close call with serious injury when he was caught in a house fire in Sydney ’s west on Saturday night. The toddler was playing alone in his second-floor bedroom at his Fairfield Heights home when a mattress caught fire, trapping him inside.

Toddler trapped in bedroom as mattress ignites. He suffered smoke inhalation and airway burns, which can be life-threatening. NSW Fire and Rescue pulled the boy from bedding about to catch fire about 6pm and administered oxygen to him on the street. “The toddler was covered from top to toe with soot,” NSW Fire and Rescue superintendent Adam Dewberry said. “They could actually hear the screaming and the crying out.
