On a Tuesday night that could and should have long-reaching repercussions for the city of San Antonio and its resident NBA team, the Spurs cashed in a 14-percent chance and won the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft.

Victor Wembanyama is considered the big prize of this year’s NBA draft. The Spurs, the Rockets, the Hornets and the Pistons are in a race to the bottom for the best odds of landing the French big man.

That gives them the right to draft Victor Wembanyama, the 19-year-old French phenom billed as a generational talent apt to change the team's fortunes for years to come. The news was met by a Texas-sized"whoop" from Spurs chairman Peter J. Holt, who was representing the club on the dais in Chicago."I might faint," Holt told a national television audience on ESPN a few moments after the drawing results were revealed.

Twenty-six years before, Holt's father, Peter M. Holt, was on stage the last time the Spurs landed the No. 1 pick. The Spurs used that 1997 spot to select Tim Duncan, a draft that brought five championships and an unprecedented run of success to San Antonio.
