More than 20 years after a four-year tenure with the Spurs that included the 1999 NBA championship, Jaren Jackson returns as a UIW assistant.
After a 12-year NBA career that included nine teams, Jaren Jackson's coaching career has included several stops in the NBA G League, including a recent stint with the Westchester Knicks.Jaren Jackson last stepped on a basketball court at Incarnate Word more than 20 years ago, during his four-year stint with the San Antonio Spurs.
As his highlight video played and an ovation washed over him, Jackson shared an embrace near midcourt with his son, Memphis All-Star Jaren Jackson Jr., who scored 28 points as the Grizzlies won 126-120 in overtime. Jackson’s playing career wound through nine NBA teams, four Continental Basketball Association teams, a World Basketball League team and a European Basketball League club before his retirement in 2002.
“Jaren’s biggest strength is his personality,” Heirman said. “He’s exuberant. He’s fun to be around. As we develop young men, not just from the playing perspective, but holistically, there’s nobody better. … He’s got this natural energy that is contagious, and you want to be around it. To be able to have him every day with us and injecting that into our players is really significant.”
Jackson said the Spurs in many ways were structured more like a college program than a professional franchise, instilling a culture of grit and “nastiness.”
