Groover and fellow actress Zurin Villanueva alternate playing the role of the music icon, who died last year after battling a long illness."This show is a beast," said Groover. "We get a fraction of what her life was like playing this role. We are on stage for almost three hours nonstop, singing all of her songs that everyone knows and loves. You get to see it in a different context.
The musical follows Turner's rise to fame as the lead singer of the husband-wife duo "Ike & Tina Turner," giving the public a look at the couple's abusive relationship and Tina's successful solo career. "It's very challenging," said Deon Releford-Lee, who plays Ike Turner in the show. "This man is one of the fathers of rock 'n' roll who never got recognized, and that is something I can relate to — being good at something and maybe not getting my flowers or recognition, and getting my work stolen from me. I try to focus on that to ground myself on playing someone who is so difficult.
