Columbia University professor writes about women like Tina Turner and Serena Williams who live without apology.
As writer and scholar Deborah Paredez worked on her new book about divas, her mind often turned to her own life. The native San Antonian remembered watching “ West Side Story ” over and over with her mom, both of them reveling in Rita Moreno ’s unforgettable dancing. She recalled the pain of learning that Selena had been killed, which happened shortly after Paredez moved to Chicago for grad school. And she flashed back to the joy of dancing at a Celia Cruz show at a club.
” Paredez — who also wrote “Selenidad: Selena, Latinos and the Performance of Memory” — has been studying, teaching and writing about divas for a long time. She’s drawn to them partly because they live unapologetic lives that provide an avenue to explore all kinds of larger themes, including feminism and artmaking. Their lives also often include struggle, and there are lessons to be learned from how they face challenges.
