Experts warn TikTok users not to pay for a VIP Membership Upgrade as hackers strike. Here’s what you need to know about the latest scam.
that President Donald Trump is said to be finalizing. Thankfully, the cybersecurity headlines had dried up, with the last I covered here being theback in August. But all good things come to an end, and now it has been confirmed that TikTok users are being targeted by a scam that sees hackers literally trying to sell them access to their own money.
Yes, you read that right. Here’s everything you need to know about the TikTok VIP Upgrade hack attack. Like most such scams, this one has its roots in good old-fashioned phishing. According to a Malwarebytes threat intelligence analyst, Stefan Dasic, the attack targets TikTok users through direct messages in what has become known as the VIP Upgrade hack. The scam begins with a new message dropping into your TikTok DMs, from a new account that is absolutely struggling to stay on the flagpole, such is the wind around it, carrying the information that they have a terminal illness and want to leave you some crypto. Yeah, right, seriously. Sadly, greed can often be a stronger driver than common sense, and people will get pulled into this trap of thinking that a total stranger wants to give them money. At the bottom of the DM,, “a ready-made username and password for a crypto site you’ve never used,” appears.” The scam funnel is designed specifically for smartphones, specifically for TikTok users with “big tap targets, short copy, sticky chat bubbles.”Long story short, should you use the credentials to log into the supposed crypto payment platform, you won’t be able to do much. Well, anything other than get caught in the trap, that is. “Users see what looks like a real account with a large balance and a withdraw button,” Dasic explained, “but any attempt to withdraw prompts a requirement for a withdrawal key the scammer holds.” You can only get this key and get hold of the money if you pay for a VIP membership upgrade. If you are foolish enough to pay up, then you will get trapped in a never-ending loop of having to pay for another security key to complete a fake transfer with no option of actually withdrawing funds. “Victims end up paying for the privilege of moving fake numbers between fake accounts,” Dasic concluded, “then paying again to unlock a withdrawal that never happens.”I have reached out to TikTok for any advice it can give users who may have received such a DM, but in the meantime, Malwarebytes said that users should never pay to unlock money. “If funds are yours, you don’t buy permission to move them.” If you think you might have been caught out already, then Malwarebytes said you should “change passwords, enable 2FA, reset app passwords, and review recovery phone/email details” as well as
